Australia’s largest residential homebuilder, Metricon’s chief executive, Brad Duggan says the solution to getting more young people the keys to their first home is restoring confidence.
He says young people are starting to give up hope to build a home, and global uncertainty is a factor in that.
Mr Duggan says while Metricon has enough work to keep them busy for the next 12 months, he has seen a ‘significant evaporation’ of demand in the market. He blames higher interest rates, the federal government tax changes, and the war in the Middle East.
To solve the housing crisis, he says, housing supply needs to be addressed. He thinks the tax changes will eventually drive investment into new homes.
